SEAL Your Sleep: Can Navy SEALs Really Drift Off in Two Minutes?

Ever lie awake counting sheep while wishing you could fall asleep as fast as a Navy SEAL? A popular technique called the "Military Sleep Method" claims to do just that.
This method combines progressive muscle relaxation and mental calming to lull you to sleep in a mere two minutes. Here's how:
  • Progressive Power Down: Start by tensing and relaxing different muscle groups, one by one. Begin with your forehead, feeling the tension melt away as you move down to your toes. Imagine a warm wave washing over your body with each release.
  • 4-7-8 Breathing: This breathing technique, developed by Dr. Andrew Weil, helps with emotional regulation. Repeating the process for four breath cycles engages the vagus nerve, pulling the body out of fight or flight.
    • Begin by inhaling through your nose for 4 seconds
    • Now hold it for 7 seconds
    • Lastly, exhale for 8 seconds
  • Quiet Your Mind: When distracting thoughts pop up, don't fight them. Instead, visualize peaceful scenes like a still lake or a cozy hammock. If that doesn't work, silently repeat "don't think" for ten seconds.
Navy SEALS are highly trained in nervous system relaxation techniques, and 4-7-8 breathing is often referenced. Progressive muscle relaxation has been shown to reduce anxiety and promote sleep for some people.
Here's the catch: Like any skill, mastering this method might take practice. Plus, a good night's sleep is about more than just a quick trick. Maintaining a relaxing bedtime routine and ensuring a comfortable sleep environment are crucial for quality sleep.
The takeaway? The Military Sleep Method offers a handy tool to add to your sleep hygiene toolbox. While it might not turn you into a sleep-on-command commando right away, it's worth a try! Remember, everyone sleeps differently, so find what works best for you and drift off to dreamland, Navy SEAL speed or not.

Neurofeedback: A New Frontier in Eating Disorder Treatment

7/15/2024

Emerging research offers a promising approach to the treatment of eating disorders: neurofeedback. This innovative technique harnesses the power of real-time brain activity monitoring to help individuals gain better control over their mental processes. It provided new hope for those struggling with conditions such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge-eating disorder.
Eating disorders affect millions worldwide, with serious physical and psychological consequences. Traditional treatments often fall short in addressing the underlying neurobiological factors. Neurofeedback offers a novel approach by targeting brain regions involved in emotional regulation, self-control, and reward processing. Individuals with eating disorders often exhibit abnormal brain activity in these areas.
Here at Aspen Neuro, we use neurofeedback to address these abnormalities through providing real-time feedback on brain wave patterns. Over time, individuals learn to shift their brain activity towards more balanced, healthy patterns, which can reduce symptoms like compulsive behaviors and emotional dysregulation. Neurofeedback also helps by training the brain to respond more effectively to emotional stimuli. This improved emotional regulation can decrease the reliance on disordered eating behaviors as coping mechanisms, such as binge eating or restrictive eating.
Neurofeedback provides a unique and powerful tool in the treatment of eating disorders by addressing the underlying neurological dysfunctions that contribute to these conditions. Aspen Neuro offers neurofeedback as a promising treatment for eating disorders, targeting the brain to support overall recovery.
